“Profit” is sort of a loaded word in that for most folks it evokes an instant association with monetary gain. In business, this is obviously a primary motivator— and frankly, it’s one we all must consider without question. But profit can be measured in unique currencies, and it’s important to keep the specter of realizing profits in the broader view rather than the narrow. At SPL, we manage sites to advance profits for our clients— in whatever “currency” the individual client considers most valuable.
Essentially flipping the conventional perception of profit on its head, a great example of unique currency can be found in the love of family and friends. While most everyone cherishes this it may be hard to connect how a website can act as a vehicle for the greatest profit of all. But in fact, some of the sites we manage are sites that have no monetary profit motive whatsoever. Instead they have become vessels for expression where the profit realized is connectivity of kindred spirits and the free exchange of thoughts and ideas— in a milieu where anyone in the world who travels the web can join in.
When unimaginable events happen around the world, or even when a family member has been admitted to the hospital, any number of sites can develop to enable all who are interested to contribute in some way to ameliorating the grief and struggle of those closest to the situation. And the profit realized there? This currency is conveyed in the expressions of gratitude and the renewal of our faith in one another when we come together for a common cause.
And in business, as business owners we all know how our customers somehow are uniquely OUR customers. Our business grows because we respond to the demands of our unique customers— we think: better than anyone else can. We’ve built our business with that customer’s demands in mind because we know that it’s our customers that gave us life to begin with and it is without question those customers who will continue to nourish us into the future. And since web presence is really a given for today’s market in virtually any business, the question for business owners is how can we make the web experience work for our customers in the best way possible. When our customers succeed, we succeed. Right? We realize profits, both in the monetary and in the intangible, by enhancing a particular experience for our customers. We make it happen for the customer so that the currency of a satisfied customer returns to us over and over, and so that customer will spread the word of what success they’ve found by coming to our business.
